Glasgow City Cup

#preseasonsorted

Michael McGarry - Paisley Utd Captain (3 Times Winners)The Glasgow City Cup started in 2001. Coaches from local Clubs decided that the West of Scotland needed a strong Youth Football Tournament for both Scottish and Foreign Teams and so the Tournament was born. Local Teams often had to travel abroad to play against different opposition and yet in Glasgow we had some of the best facilities available. The Glasgow City Cup is an Independent Tournament hosted by Local Clubs and organised by people with youth football experience

Over the Year’s many teams have used the Tournament as an excellent way to start their pre season and we have seen Teams from overseas with FC Flora attending from Estonia in 2004 and winning the Under 15 Age Group. There has also been a regular contingent from both Republic of Ireland, Canada and England as well as visitors from Spain, and Norway.

The Tournament has been held at the Glasgow Green Football Complex which boasts 7 high quality Grass Parks on the one site and has played host for many years. In addition for 2009 we opened the new Toryglen Regional Football Complex next to Hampden Park  which has 4 new 3rd Generation Astrograss pitches.

As mentioned above, we have seen Teams participate from Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Ireland, Canada, Wales, and England, all these teams have sent back positive feedback about their time at the Glasgow City Cup and in the City of Glasgow itself. Any Teams from outwith Scotland interested in participating in what is Scotland’s Largest Youth Football Tournament should contact us by e-mail and we will pass this enquiry onto our Travel Partners who will assist in travel and accomodation, making your time in Glasgow that bit easier.

In 2007 Athlone and District from Ireland won the 16’s Age Group and returned in 2008 with a larger contingent and again won the 16’s age level. In addition the Tournament dates at the beginning of August meant we had teams from all parts of the UK and around Europe. We also welcomed First Mobile Sports Academy from Canada who visited the 2008 Tournament as well as Koboltn from Norway and North Dublin Schoolboys from Dublin. We now also have regular participation from St Oliver Plunkett FC who travel from Northern Ireland and very much see the Tournament as part of their pre season events.

Glasgow City Council,Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow Life and the Sports Council for Glasgow have all been tremendous partners for the tournaments.  .

Since 2017 the 11-A-Side event has been hosted back at Glasgow Green, with the Small Sided Event being held in Renfrewshire

In 2023 we had two teams visit from Long Island in the USA - SUSA Academy
